@Greg, thanks for addressing Bob Chapman’s question. I feel the need to ask about it again, though. You write, “Because of my proximity to so many Catholic churches in manhattan most of the people I have photographed if not all are Catholic.” This seems like an assumption. There are lots of churches in NYC, not just RC ones. The generalization of wearing ashes as “Catholic” rather than the practice of “some Christians” is not helpful for understanding one another.

@Jane Thank you for your comment! You make a good point that several others have mentioned. I have identified my subjects as Catholic simply because I know that I am in the proximity of several Roman Catholic churches. However, the project is not about Roman Catholics specifically but about Ash Wednesday and the practice of Christians of all denominations that receive ashes. That being the case, I believe that the pictures are about the display of faith. My hope is that the body of work shows a collective portrait of faith. I don’t ask people their denomination nor do I think I will in the future. Instead I will be sure to include all denominations in my discussions of the work going forward.

Are you actually only photographing Catholics? Many Christian denominations observe Ash Wednesday with the imposition of ashes. If you aren’t specifically inquiring as to whether your subjects are Roman Catholic, it’s possible you are also photographing Lutherans, Presbyterians, and other denominations of Christians as well.

Last year, the person putting ash on my forehead had an over-ashed finger & ash fell on my nose. He tried to wipe to get it off… But just made it worse. I wish you’d been around to photograph me after that moment.

I would like to share with you that many Protestant Christians also observe Lent and Ash Wednesday. I’m a Presbyterian pastor and prayed with folks this evening as we made signs of the cross with the ashes from last year’s palm fronds.
