You make a good point that several others have mentioned. I have identified my subjects as Catholic simply because I know that I am in the proximity of several Roman Catholic churches. However, the project is not about Roman Catholics specifically but about Ash Wednesday and the practice of Christians of all denominations that receive ashes. That being the case, I believe that the pictures are about the display of faith. My hope is that the body of work shows a collective portrait of faith. I don't ask people their denomination nor do I think I will in the future. Instead I will be sure to include all denominations in my discussions of the work going forward. Many Christian denominations observe Ash Wednesday with the imposition of ashes. If you aren't specifically inquiring as to whether your subjects are Roman Catholic, it's possible you are also photographing Lutherans, Presbyterians, and other denominations of Christians as well.
